Strip Mall Churches

A picture blog celebrating churches found in strip malls

Church of Christ

Church of Christ

The site has been down for a while so I am just now getting to post some of the pics I took way back in 2010. This was another one that I took with my now brother-in-law. I love the snow in front because it feels so different from the strip mall churches we have in California.

NAC Central- Iglesia Hispana Nueva Esperanza

This was the 2nd church in NAC Central. Presumably preaching the same message, but for the spanish speakers. I may have said this before, but coming from the west coast there is always something about the brick buildings that I find mesmerizing.

NAC Central – North Arundel Church

NAC Central - North Arundel Church

So far this blog has mostly focused on my home state of California. But a trip to DC in the winter served as a reminder that strip mall churches are a national phenomenon. My sister’s friend had recommended a few locations so with my sister’s fiancĂ© leading the charge, we photographed strip mall church after strip mall church.

NAC Central was the first place on our list. Made up of two churches, the North Arundel Church served as a beacon of light in a neighborhood filled with auto shops, pawn shops and a smattering of graffiti. We skipped the Mexican food next door because we already had dinner plans, but next time we’ll definitely have to stop by.

Calvary Chapel

Calvary Chapel

I discovered Calvary Chapel on a trip to eastern San Diego a while back. Apparently, there are half a dozen Calvary Chappels, but this one was located in the beautiful El Cajon and surrounded by a storage place and a few different auto shops. I am not sure if all the Calvary Chappels are located in strip malls, but it would definitely be a first if that is the case. I will be following up with some research.
